Malaysian rapper and filmmaker Namewee, whose real name is Wee Meng Chee, is expected to have one of his drug-related charges dropped after authorities found no traces of drugs in his system

Attorney-General Tan Sri Dusuki Mokhtar confirmed to Malaysiakini that the prosecution will apply for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) for the charge of self-administering amphetamine, methamphetamine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and ketamine.

"Since the pathology report is negative, the prosecution will apply for DNAA for the offence under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. Meanwhile, the prosecution involving offences under Section 39A(1), on drug possession, will remain," Dusuki told Malaysiakini.

Namewee, 42, was charged on 24 October with two drug offences

One charge was for possessing 5.12g of ecstasy in a hotel room along Jalan Conlay in Bukit Bintang, and another for self-administering multiple controlled substances.

He pleaded not guilty to both charges.

His lawyer, Joshua Tay, told reporters that the urine test report submitted by the prosecution showed no traces of drugs in Namewee's system.

He added that the prosecution is expected to formally drop the self-administration charge soon, according to the New Straits Times.

"The charge of possessing ecstasy under Section 39A(1) remains, as we are still awaiting the updated chemist report from the prosecution," Tay said.

The charges carry different penalties under Malaysian law

Section 15(1)(a), for self-administration, carries a maximum RM5,000 fine or up to two years in prison, plus two to three years' supervision.

Section 39A(1), for drug possession, carries two to five years' imprisonment and three to nine strokes of the cane upon conviction.

Namewee is currently out on RM4,000 bail

The Kuala Lumpur magistrates' court has fixed the next mention dates for his cases on Monday, 22 December, and 19 January 2026, after he fell ill with Influenza A and submitted a medical certificate.

The drug charges are separate from the ongoing murder investigation into the death of Taiwanese influencer Iris Hsieh Yu-hsin, who was found dead in a hotel bathtub on 22 October.

Namewee remains a key figure assisting authorities in that investigation.
