Police Inspector-General Datuk Seri Mohamad Khalid Ismail has confirmed that a major operation is currently underway to investigate a highly organised drug syndicate in Langkawi

The investigation follows an exclusive report by Harian Metro alleging that a police officer masterminds the network.

Khalid said the police are currently working to identify the specific individuals and groups linked to the network. He stressed that those involved will not be let "off the hook", regardless of their background.

While the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department typically handles internal matters, the IGP clarified that this case will be treated as a direct criminal offence, potentially involving security laws.

The investigation was triggered by reports detailing the emergence of a new distribution network following the death of Mat Nahar — notoriously known as the "Pablo Escobar of Langkawi" — six years ago

According to the report, the syndicate is allegedly led by an individual known as 'Mr A'. The network reportedly employs the same henchmen who served under Mat Nahar before his death.

The syndicate's sophisticated operation was cited as a primary reason drug activities persist in Langkawi despite continuous enforcement efforts by the police and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK).

"I will call for a formal press conference to provide details once the investigation is complete. But I assure you, we will not let those involved off the hook," Khalid said after launching the fifth PDRM Special Dialogue 2026 today, 12 May.
