A Russian boxer is facing backlash after a video of her sharing her vape pen with an orangutan at a safari park in Crimea, Russia went viral
This act has allegedly left the animal in a concerning lethargic state.
According to The New York Post, the 24-year-old athlete, Anastasia Luchkina, is now facing public outcry, potential financial penalties, and a possible ban from the safari park, with park veterinarians expressing grave concerns over the orangutan's deteriorating health.
The video shows Luchkina taking a puff from her vape pen before pushing it towards the face of an orangutan named Dana, who was curiously observing from behind the enclosure
Mimicking what she saw, Dana placed her lips on the device and took a puff before seemingly gesturing for another. The video then shows the orangutan trying to pull the vape cartridge into her mouth, as Luchkina attempts to take it back.
Dana has been showing concerning signs since the vaping incident
According to veterinarians at the park, Dana has subsequently exhibited a loss of appetite, ceased interacting with other animals and caretakers, and remains largely motionless for extended periods.
"I'm worried that Dana might've swallowed the cap, because this plastic can cause intestinal blockage and vomiting. It is dangerous if she swallowed the [cartridge]; then, God forbid, Dana will have to be operated on," said one of the park's caretakers.
Dana belongs to an endangered species of orangutans, a classification highlighted in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species
As for Luchkina, she is facing potential repercussions, including a fine and a prohibition from entering the park.
"I didn't know Anastasia was a smoker. She is currently on holiday. We will definitely discuss this matter when she returns," said her coach, Vladimir Akatov.
