A man and woman were caught attempting to smuggle 102 mobile phones across a border checkpoint in Zhuhai, China, by taping the devices to their bodies and using a baby stroller as a distraction

According to Sing Tao Daily, the couple entered the 'green lane' — meant for travellers with no items to declare — at Gongbei Customs, a checkpoint on the mainland China-Macau border.

However, customs officers were suspicious and stopped them for further inspection.

As they began directing the couple aside for additional checks, the woman suddenly turned and fled, leaving the stroller — and the baby inside — behind.

The incident occurred around 8.28am on 1 July.

Upon detaining the pair, officers discovered a total of 102 mobile phones wrapped in plastic and strapped beneath their clothing on their legs, waists, and torsos.

Authorities later confirmed that the baby in the stroller was the woman's biological child. However, the two suspects were not married.

Sing Tao Daily reported that, under Chinese law, concealing taxable goods to evade customs checks is considered smuggling.

In severe cases, individuals involved may face criminal charges.
