A 22-year-old Chinese national student who allegedly stabbed his ex-girlfriend at a private University last week has been granted bail of RM20,000 with two sureties

The accused, You Wei, was charged at the Shah Alam Sessions Court today, 21 July, under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt by stabbing the woman, a student at the private university, in the neck with a knife.

The alleged stabbing took place at the private university in Sunway on 14 July

If convicted, You faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine, or whipping.

When the charge was read to him, the accused told the court that he understood but "disagreed", according to FMT.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Sofea Jaysal objected to the bail, arguing that You was a flight risk.

However, his lawyer, Revin Kumar, said the accused was willing to comply with all bail conditions, including surrendering his passport and reporting to the police monthly.

"He wants to answer this charge. He will be here as he is completing his studies," Revin told the court, adding that You has bipolar disorder and is currently on medication.

Judge Norazlin Othman allowed bail with conditions that You must not contact the victim or any witnesses, must surrender his passport, and is required to report to the nearest police station once a month.

The court set 17 September for mention.
