A 42-year-old man has died of heatstroke after completing a 30km trail run in Penang
In a statement issued on Saturday, 2 May, the Penang Health Department confirmed that the incident occurred on 26 April.
The runner, who was from Tampin, Negeri Sembilan, had completed the 30km race, which began at 6.30am on 25 April, before reportedly collapsing at the finish line at around 4pm.

He was given emergency treatment at the scene before being rushed to Penang Hospital in critical condition. He was later admitted to the ICU, but was pronounced dead at 2.08am the next day.

Following the incident, the state health department advised the public, especially those engaging in outdoor or strenuous activities, to be mindful of their physical condition and the weather.
"Ensure adequate hydration and stop immediately if you experience early symptoms of heat exhaustion such as dizziness, nausea, or muscle cramps," it said.
It also shared these tips for hot weather:
– Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun
– Drink water frequently to stay hydrated
– Limit intense physical activity
– Wear protective gear such as hats or use umbrellas, and opt for lightweight clothing
– Take extra care of high-risk groups, including children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses
– Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of heat-related illness occur
Meanwhile, Penang Youth, Sports, and Health Committee chairman Daniel Gooi Zi Sen said organisers had followed all required SOPs
He said there were enough water stations and medical teams along the route, and that help was given quickly when the runner became unwell, reported Malay Mail.
He added that SOP compliance is required for all sporting events in the state, especially to ensure proper medical support.
"We advise the public participating in sports to remain aware of their health levels, stay hydrated, and avoid pushing themselves beyond their physical limits," he said.
