Datuk Johnny Lim Eng Seng has become the first Chinese Malaysian to be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General in the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), marking a historic milestone

The three-star rank was officially conferred in a ceremony, officiated by Chief of Defence Forces General Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar, at Wisma Pertahanan in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, 23 June.

According to Harian Metro, ATM said Lim's promotion reflects its merit-based system and commitment to diversity.

"This promotion highlights that opportunities within the armed forces are accessible and grounded in merit and service excellence.

"It is hoped that this will also inspire greater interest among other ethnic groups to pursue a career in this noble profession," ATM said in a statement.

Born in Melaka, Lim began his education at St Francis Primary School from 1973 to 1978, and later attended St Francis Secondary School until 1983

He joined the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the UK under the 25th Regular Commission Intake (TJT 25) in 1985, and was commissioned into the Royal Ranger Regiment in 1986.

Reflecting on his promotion, Lim expressed pride in representing the Chinese and Baba Peranakan communities in the military.

"I have served the country for 41 years. It is a testimony that if one works hard and sacrifices for the country, one can surely succeed.

"There is no greater honour than to serve our beloved country with my fellow countrymen and women," he told the New Straits Times.

In his message to the younger generation, Lim shared the deeper value of pursuing a military career

"We form lifelong bonds, face danger together, and find strength in shared challenges and esprit de corps," he said.
