A primary school in Putrajaya has been named a top 10 finalist in the 'Supporting Healthy Lives' category of the 2025 World's Best School Prizes, recognised for its groundbreaking, student-led mental health initiative

SK Putrajaya Presint 11(1) was given the honour in recognition of HELPIE — a mobile app developed by its students, for students — to help its pupils better understand and manage stress.

According to the school's finalist profile, the app offers interactive tools for stress identification, emotional support, fun games, and health campaigns, making mental wellness both accessible and engaging for young learners.

The idea for HELPIE came after a 2023 school study revealed nearly half of the students were experiencing stress and had difficulty expressing their emotions

In response, a group of students and teachers teamed up to design and develop an app as a comprehensive stress management tool.

According to awards organiser, T4 Education, the initiative has already made a significant impact.

Since launching the app, the school has seen:
– A 60% drop in student stress levels
– Over 90% of students reporting a better understanding of their emotions
– 87% saying they now understand their stress better
– A 40% improvement in classroom behaviour, according to teachers
– Teachers reporting a better capacity to support students emotionally
– Greater involvement from parents and the community in student wellbeing

The success of HELPIE also helped the school win the AIA Healthiest Schools Competition in 2024.

The school is now planning to publish the app on the Google Play store, so it can be used in other schools' counselling programmes.
