Penang’s First LRT Line Begins Construction In 2 Months. Here’s All You Need To Know
The Mutiara Line will be the first LRT system outside the Klang Valley.

Construction works for Penang's very own Light Rail Transit (LRT) is finally on track, and is expected to begin in a month or two!
According to the New Straits Times, Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that physical works for the LRT Mutiara Line will kick off by August 2025.
The LRT Mutiara Line is expected to be completed by 2030.
Originally initiated by the Penang state government, the project was taken over by the federal government in early 2024, with MRT Corp now serving as the developer and owner.

The Mutiara Line marks a major milestone as Malaysia's first LRT system outside the Klang Valley
It was first proposed under the Penang Transport Master Plan (PTMP) back in 2015, aiming to improve public transport and ease traffic congestion in the state.
Spanning 29.5km with 21 stations, the line will connect George Town's city centre to Jelutong, Gelugor, and Bayan Lepas on the island, and extend across to Seberang Perai on the mainland.
A single journey from end to end is expected to take around 49 minutes.
It is projected to serve a total of 45,600 passengers per day in its first year of operation.
