Animal welfare groups have announced a RM51,100 reward for information leading to those responsible for skinning a dog alive in Melaka

In a Facebook post, Persatuan Haiwan Terbiar Malaysia (SAFM) said it held a joint press conference with the Melaka Fursave Association (MFA) yesterday, 20 August, to announce the reward.

The fund was initially raised through public and local business contributions, totalling RM21,100.

A concerned businessman later contributed an additional RM30,000, bringing the total to RM51,100.

SAFM urged the police and the Department of Veterinary Services (DVS) to take immediate and serious action in investigating the matter, stressing the importance of swiftly bringing the perpetrators to justice.

"SAFM and MFA remain steadfast in our commitment to securing justice for Biao Mei (the dog that was skinned alive) and ensuring that those responsible for such acts of cruelty are held accountable," the NGO said.

The incident occurred last week when a dog was found at the Krubong Industrial Area with the skin on its head and back stripped off

According to Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit, a local feeder who often cared for stray dogs in the area brought the injured animal to a veterinary clinic, but the injuries and infection were too severe.

"On the veterinarian's advice, the dog was euthanised to avoid prolonging its suffering," Patit said.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 29 of the Animal Welfare Act 2015.

Those present at the press conference included SAFM president Kalaivanan Ravichandran, MFA president Keith Ng, businessman and animal advocate Packie, Melaka lawyer and exco member Kent Tan, Golden Heart Shelter's Sani Abdullah, KC Valley's Dr Chia and Mr Chia, PeLindung's Nasir Abdul Aziz, a representative from Kelab Pencinta Haiwan Melaka, as well as members of several other NGOs.
