Intoxicated Driver Charged With Murder Over Fatal Klang Crash

He also faces a separate charge for drug use.

The driver suspected of being under the influence of alcohol and drugs during a crash that killed a motorcylist has been charged with murder at the Klang Magistrate's Court today, 1 April

According to the New Straits Times, the accused, R Saktygaanapathy, 28, nodded to indicate he understood the charge when it was read before Magistrate A Karthiyayini. No plea was recorded as the case falls under the High Court's jurisdiction.

He is accused of murdering Amirul Hafiz Omar, 33, along Jalan Raya Barat in Klang at 11.47am on 29 March.

The charge under Section 302 of the Penal Code carries the death penalty or imprisonment of between 30 and 40 years. If the death penalty is not imposed, the offender faces a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

In a separate case, Saktygaanapathy pleaded guilty to self-administering benzodiazepine and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at the Klang Selatan district police headquarters' narcotics office at 3.30pm on the same day

This charge, under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, carries a fine of up to RM5,000, a maximum two years' jail, or both upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin handled the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.

The New Straits Times reported that Saktygaanapathy looked calm throughout the proceedings.

Meanwhile, Amirul's widow, Nor Nadia Abdul Majid, also appeared composed as she followed the proceedings.
