A 26-year-old man who broke into a women's hostel and raped one of its occupants died after a struggle with police during his arrest in Wangsa Maju, Kuala Lumpur

The man earlier made headlines for storming into a staff dormitory in broad daylight, tying up four women, raping one of them, and confronting responding police officers with a knife.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus said the incident occurred at 12.40pm after officers responded to an emergency call about a break-in at a residential unit.

"Two police personnel rushed to the location and knocked on the door, but received no response. Five minutes later, a man opened the door. The officers identified themselves and entered the unit to investigate," he said.

The suspect, who had 10 prior criminal offences for robbery and had posed as a delivery rider, suddenly pulled out a meat cleaver and attempted to attack the officers, explained Fadil.

"One of the officers managed to dodge the swing, but the suspect punched him in the face and bit his hand. With help from a security guard, the suspect was eventually subdued and arrested," Fadil added.

After being detained, the man complained of breathing difficulties

An ambulance was called, but medical officers who arrived 40 minutes later confirmed that he had died at the scene.

A post-mortem was conducted at Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL).

Fadil said the cause of death is still under investigation, and forensic examination did not find any obvious external injuries on the suspect's body.

Police investigations revealed that during the break-in, four local women were inside the unit

"The suspect tied up all the victims and locked three of them in the master bedroom. One woman was taken to another room, where she was raped twice, including in the bathroom.

"All four victims sustained minor injuries to their hands, faces, and bodies," Fadil said.

The suspect had also stolen RM200 in cash, as well as the victims' ATM cards, before committing the assault.
