A 14-year-old boy has been remanded for six days until Sunday, 14 December, over the fatal shooting of his friend with a homemade shotgun during a game of hide-and-seek

Keningau district police chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said the suspect's 70-year-old father, believed to be the gun's owner, and the suspect's 13-year-old sibling, who allegedly hid the weapon, were also remanded to assist with investigations.

The incident occurred on the morning of 7 December in the compound of a house along Jalan Kem PPH in Keningau.

Doctors at Keningau Hospital's emergency unit alerted police after receiving the victim. He was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, and a police report was lodged at 9.10am.

A medical examination found 14 gunshot wounds on the boy's body

Of these, five were on the right chest, four on the right arm, two on the right knee, and three on the left side. The injuries are believed to have been caused by scatter-shot ammunition fired from the weapon, known locally as a bakakuk.

Preliminary investigations indicate the weapon was fired from a distance of about 3m in front of the house. Two pellets were recovered near bloodstains at the scene where the victim collapsed.

The victim, also 14 and a Form 2 student, frequently stayed overnight at the suspect's home, a former police housing unit at the Forest Police Force Camp in Keningau, according to Daily Express.

His body has been sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu for a post-mortem.
