UPDATE:

Boy Who Shot Dead Form 2 Student Remanded Alongside Dad & Younger Brother

A 14-year-old boy in Sabah was shot dead yesterday morning, 7 December, when his friend fired a homemade shotgun while they were playing hide-and-seek

The incident took place around 8am at a house along Jalan Kem PPH in Keningau. The Form 2 student had been playing with his friend when the weapon, known locally as a bakakuk, was fired from a distance of about 3m.

The friend reportedly did not realise the gun was loaded.

Villagers rushed the victim to Keningau Hospital, but he was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the Emergency Unit, reported Harian Metro.

Keningau district police chief Supt Yampil Anak Garai said initial findings indicated the victim's friend saw him holding the shotgun outside the house shortly before the shooting.

The friend, also 14, had asked to hold the weapon as a joke

"While they were playing hide-and-seek, the victim hid under the house. The suspect is believed to have accidentally pulled the trigger and fired the weapon towards him," Yampil was quoted as saying.

Panic set in immediately after the shot, and the boy sought help from passing villagers, who rushed the victim to the hospital.

A medical examination later found 14 pellet wounds across the victim's chest, arm, knee, and left side of his body.

Police have since recovered the weapon from the suspect's family

Investigators found that a 13-year-old, the suspect's younger brother, had hidden the shotgun, which belonged to their 70-year-old father.

All three family members have been detained for further investigation.

"Police also seized the bakakuk, live ammunition, spent casings, the suspect's clothing and two mobile phones," he said.

A post-mortem is being carried out at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
