A 31-year-old man led police on a dramatic one-hour car chase through the streets of Kuching, a pursuit that was caught on video and has since gone viral

The footage, uploaded on 29 July by the Facebook page Kelab Info Malaysia, shows multiple police vehicles tailing a white Perodua Axia. At the time of writing, the video has racked up over 51,000 views, 600 likes, and more than 50 comments.

According to Kota Samarahan district police chief Supt Damataries Lautin, the chase began when two patrol officers spotted the Axia behaving suspiciously in a back alley behind Aiman Mall. As they approached the vehicle, the driver suddenly sped off, ignoring repeated commands to stop.

Reinforcements from both the patrol unit and the quick response team were called in. During the escape attempt, the suspect, with a string of past criminal and drug-related offences, rammed into the left side of a police vehicle.

The chase lasted nearly an hour before the suspect abandoned his car on Lorong 6, Jalan Setapak

He tried to flee on foot into nearby bushes but was caught and subdued after a brief struggle.

Damataries said the suspect, who is from Kampung Tjika in Simunjan, has seven previous records involving burglary and drug use. However, no illegal items were found in the car, and the vehicle itself was not reported stolen.

The case is now being investigated under Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant from carrying out their duties, reported China Press.
