A university student in his 20s was arrested along with his minor girlfriend, a Form 5 student, following a high-speed police chase on Monday in Jeli, Kelantan

According to Jeli district police chief Supt Kamarulzaman Harun, the pair were parked by the roadside when police approached around 3.30pm.

He said the male student had earlier picked up the girl, who is sitting for her Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations, from her school in Jeli.

"However, the couple were startled when police officers on patrol approached their vehicle," the New Straits Times quoted him as saying.

According to the English daily, Kamarulzaman said that the couple had parked by the roadside to engage in sexual activity.

The student then sped off, leading to a pursuit that ended in Kampung Rabbana, where officers blocked the vehicle

During the arrest, the driver allegedly resisted, resulting in a scuffle with police.

The male student is now being investigated under Section 14(a) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act for sexual assault of a child, an offence carrying a maximum of 20 years' imprisonment and whipping.

Earlier, he was remanded for four days under Sections 186 and 279 of the Penal Code for obstructing a public servant and reckless driving.

Police said his remand ended today, 4 December, and authorities are seeking a fresh remand under the sexual offences law.

The female student was released on police bail, reported the New Straits Times.

Authorities confirmed that neither has a prior criminal record.
