A married man working at a telecommunications company has been arrested in Johor after sending a disturbing birthday request to his underage niece via WhatsApp

The 37-year-old's message ultimately led to the revelation of a much earlier, more serious offence.

According to Kluang police chief ACP Bahrin Mohd Noh, the teenager received a message from her uncle on 24 June while she was at school, requesting a birthday gift.

When she replied that she didn't have any money, he allegedly hinted there were "gifts" that didn't require any.

"The victim understood that the suspect wanted to invite her to 'sleep' with him," Bahrin was quoted as saying.

Disturbed, the girl filed a police report on Saturday, 5 July.

She alleged that the man had sexually assaulted her in 2023 while she was staying over at his house

Bahrin said the alleged incident occurred at the suspect's house in 2023, while the victim, who was 15 at the time, was asleep.

"The uncle raped the teenager while she was sleeping," he said, adding that she never told anyone at the time because she was afraid.

The man, who has no prior criminal record and tested negative for drugs, was arrested on Friday, 11 July, according to Kosmo.

He has been remanded for five days to assist in investigations under Section 376 of the Penal Code.
