Johor police have expressed serious concern over a significant increase in the number of rape cases involving teenage victims across the state

Police chief Datuk M Kumar listed online pornography, insufficient parental supervision, and eroding moral values among the youth as key reasons for this spike.

Between 2023 and 2024, a total of 54 cases involving teenage victims were recorded. Kumar noted that most of these incidents were linked to easy access to explicit content on social media platforms and dysfunctional family structures.

The police chief also highlighted other serious issues facing the youth

"These children are falling through the cracks. Many come from homes lacking love, attention, or parental control," he said during his speech at the Johor police monthly assembly today, 18 June.

He added that a considerable number of cases stemmed from an ignorance of sexual crime laws and the absence of early parental intervention.

He said that the police's Sexual Crimes Unit (D11) has been actively conducting school outreach programmes aimed at raising awareness about the dangers and consequences of such offences

On a separate matter, Kumar said police officers themselves are facing increasing psychological pressure, which he attributed to demanding workload and personal stress.

In response to these concerns, the Integrity and Standard Compliance Department (JIPS) has introduced a mental health intervention initiative, called "Let's Get Together with Your Counsellor".

Briefings are also provided to assist supervisors in detecting early signs of distress among personnel

"Good leadership requires empathy. Officers who lead with the heart will preserve the dignity and performance of the team," Kumar said, adding that despite these internal challenges, the Johor police contingent has delivered strong results.
