A horrifying incident shook residents of Indonesia on Saturday, 2 August, when a teenage girl allegedly killed her mother while she was performing her Zuhur prayer at home
According to a report by Rakyat Bengkulu Television (RBTV), the suspect, a minor identified only by her initials NR, is believed to have attacked her 49-year-old mother, Yati, inside their home on Jalan Manggis, Kelurahan Panorama, Bengkulu.
The daughter allegedly struck her mother's head with a stone grinding tool before fatally stabbing her with a sharp weapon.
The disturbing act was allegedly carried out while the victim was in the middle of her prayers.
NR, who is said to be the eldest child, reportedly ran to a neighbour after the incident and confessed to what had happened.
The neighbour, Ice Purnamasari, said NR claimed she had been possessed at the time of the attack.
"She told me she stabbed her mother while being possessed," the neighbour was quoted as saying.
Yati was found lifeless by neighbours, who then alerted the authorities
Officers from the Gading Cempaka police sector (Polsek), together with the Macan Gading Resmob team from Bengkulu city police (Polresta), arrived at the scene and arrested the teenager for further investigation.
The suspect was taken to the Bengkulu police headquarters for questioning, while her two younger siblings were temporarily placed under the care of neighbours.
According to another neighbour, Yuli, the daughter has a history of mental illness and had been discharged from a psychiatric hospital just three days ago.
"She's been in and out of the mental hospital, and only just came home recently," Yuli said.
As of now, she remains in custody while authorities determine the next steps.
