A stepfather has been arrested after he was suspected of secretly filming his own family members in the bathroom of their house in Tawau, Sabah

Tawau district police chief ACP Jasmin Hussin stated that the 39-year-old suspect was detained at 8.07pm on Monday, 12 January, less than two hours after police received a report at 6.27pm, reported Harian Metro.

According to him, the act was uncovered when a 12-year-old girl found a mobile phone, believed to belong to her stepfather, hidden inside the house toilet.

The phone was in recording mode, and she immediately handed it over to her mother.

"An inspection revealed several video recordings involving the victim and her children, believed to have been recorded without their knowledge while using the bathroom.

"The suspect, who works as a labourer and lives in the same house as the victims, eventually admitted to the act after being questioned by family members," he said.

A preliminary inspection of the seized mobile phone found 10 video clips involving the victim and her two children

He stated that the suspect is being detained for further investigation under Section 377D and Section 509 of the Penal Code for committing acts of gross indecency and insulting the modesty of the victims.

He emphasised that the police will not compromise with any individual involved in immoral acts and privacy violations, especially those involving their own family members.

"Firm action will be taken against anyone who violates the law, including acts that defile the dignity of family members or others," he said.
