In a heartbreaking open letter, a late cancer patient detailed the alleged cruel treatment she suffered from her father and stepmother during the final years of her life

The three-page letter, uploaded by her younger sister, was shared on Facebook on Wednesday, 21 January.

The woman, surnamed Wong, died of bone cancer at Hospital Sibu last Sunday, 18 January. She was diagnosed at 14 and passed away at 22.

"Dad, I have never written a letter to you since I was a child. This letter is the last one I will write to you in this lifetime.

"By the time you receive this from third brother, I would have already gone to find mum," she began.

In the letter, written in Mandarin, Wong accused her father of failing to protect her and her sister from repeated mistreatment following her return to Sibu after undergoing cancer treatment in Kuala Lumpur.

She described being denied basic necessities, including food, money for school meals, and access to household facilities, despite her weakened physical condition.

In one passage, Wong alleged that her stepmother forced her to jump into a moving car while her leg was still injured and later made her walk home.

"When we got home, there was no food; she locked the kitchen door. We stayed hungry until you came home for dinner," she wrote.

Wong also claimed that they were not allowed to use the toilet at night and were instructed to use the one in the corridor, which was difficult due her limited mobility

Their access to electricity was allegedly restricted, with the siblings allowed to charge their mobile phones only once a day.

She also claimed they were forbidden from using common household areas and were told to dry their clothes on the iron bars of their bedroom window.

"We weren't allowed to use anything in the house, not even the toilet," she wrote.

Wong further alleged that food was used as a form of control, claiming the siblings were often left hungry, given only plain white rice and vegetables, and forbidden from eating meat.

In one incident, she claimed her stepmother shouted at her sister for reaching for a piece of meat and splashed hot soup onto her face, while their father allegedly remained silent.

"You just sat there, acting as if nothing happened," she wrote.

Wong also detailed instances of physical and emotional abuse, including claims that her stepmother damaged their belongings, cut their clothes with scissors, and searched through their personal items

She also alleged that her sister was slashed with scissors while trying to protect Wong's phone and received no medical attention.

"Once, my sister tried to protect me because she feared your wife would take my phone. Your wife tried to cut my phone's [charging wire] with scissors, and when she couldn't reach it, she cut my sister's arm instead.

"Her arm was bleeding, but you didn't take her to the hospital.

"Doesn't your heart ache seeing this? How could you watch her inflict violence on us in silence, only saying 'That's enough' after standing by for so long?"

In another incident, she claimed her stepmother told her father to instruct her to sleep on the floor because the bed belonged to the stepmother.

"Dad, I just got out of the hospital; how could I sleep on the floor?"

The young woman also accused both her father and stepmother of placing financial demands on her despite her illness, including charging her rent and electricity fees while she was unable to work full-time

She further alleged that even during her final hospitalisation, her father visited mainly to discuss money and funeral arrangements rather than her health.

"I was still in this hospital bed, Dad!

"Was I gone yet? Did you want me to die that badly? My 'good' father. Was I really not worth saving?"

She said she asked her brother to safeguard her MyKad, but her father allegedly objected and repeatedly called him to demand the identity card.

"When I heard you asking for my IC for my funeral, my heart truly hurt. I was so sad, Dad. I really loved you."

Wong also lamented that her grandfather died in an accident while raising money for her cancer treatment, an event she said left her with deep guilt and grief

"Dad, why is it that your father could die trying to save me, yet you joined your wife in torturing me?"

She claimed her paternal grandmother also abused her sister, alleging that her father allowed the violence to continue despite being aware of it.

"When we went to your mother's house, you even let her hit my sister until she bled.

"My sister went to the police, too. Both your daughters have been to the police station because of you. Doesn't that make your heart go cold?"

The letter concluded with her final wishes for her funeral arrangements and an appeal for her father to reflect on his actions.

"Dad, you should treat every child in this house with sincere love; they are your own flesh and blood.

"You even wanted to find a lawyer to sever ties with us because of her (stepmother)," she said, urging her father to change while there is still time to repent.

At the time of writing, the letter has garnered over 20,000 shares on Facebook

Her sister said she posted the letter on social media after their father refused to receive it, hoping he would read it online.

She also uploaded a police report along with video and photo evidence of the alleged abuse.

She said her sister's funeral was arranged hastily and did not follow tradition, reportedly because "their father and grandmother were still alive".

"Everything was handled with extreme simplicity and haste, leaving us no time for a proper farewell and without any religious rites or ceremonies," the sister said.

She expressed gratitude to the Sibu Life Care Society, Nirvana Memorial Park, Master Ah Ming, and other anonymous donors for making the funeral possible on Monday, 19 January.

Wong's alleged abuse has drawn the attention of police and the Sarawak deputy minister for public health, housing and local government II, Datuk Michael Tiang

According to the Borneo Post, the Sibu district police have launched a full investigation into the abuse allegations.

Sibu police chief ACP Zulkipli Suhaili confirmed that police received a report on 9 December 2025, from a local woman claiming she had been subjected to abuse by her family since 2013.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 31(1) of the Child Act 2001, which carries punishments of up to 20 years in jail, a RM50,000 fine, or both, upon conviction.

Meanwhile, Tiang expressed deep concern about the matter and that Sibu will establish a community social support centre as a one-stop hub for social intervention, referrals, and crisis response.

Asking for help is not a sign of weakness.
