A 30-year-old teacher slashed his wife with a kitchen knife before turning the weapon on himself just before Subuh prayers

The incident occurred at their home in Bayan Lepas, Penang, early this morning, 27 August.

Southwest district police chief ACP Sazalee Adam said police received a call about the incident at 6am.

"The 28-year-old victim sustained injuries to her neck, while the 30-year-old suspect suffered severe wounds to his neck and hand after slashing himself," he said.

Both were rushed to Penang Hospital, where the woman is reported to be in stable condition. The suspect remains in critical condition, reported Berita Harian.

Preliminary investigations revealed the couple, who have been married for six years, are schoolteachers in the Northeast district.

They studied Mandarin as a second language at a university in Beijing, China.

They also have a 3-year-old daughter.

The victim's mother told police she was startled by her daughter's frantic screams from an upstairs bedroom

"Upon rushing upstairs, the mother saw the suspect pinning her daughter to the bed and attempting to slit her throat," Sazalee told the New Straits Times.

He said it was the couple's daily routine to wake up for Subuh prayer and get ready for work.

"Initial investigations and witness statements, including from the family, indicate this was a harmonious couple.

"There are no known financial problems, no history of arguments and no signs of depression or mental health issues. Everything seemed fine. There are also no prior reports of domestic disputes involving the couple," Sazalee was quoted as saying.

The case is currently being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

The man's motive remains unknown.
