As the launch of the BUDI95 targeted subsidy approaches, the Petroleum Dealers Association of Malaysia (PDAM) has a simple PSA: don't rush to petrol stations on 30 September

In an interview with BFM today, 25 September, PDAM president Datuk Khairul Anwar Abdul Aziz urged Malaysians to avoid flocking to the pumps on the first day of the rollout, warning that a sudden surge in demand could overwhelm the new system.

He explained that on an average day, petrol stations across the country serve between three and four million customers.

However, he is concerned this number could skyrocket on the first day of the rollout, as people may be driven by a mix of "anxiety" and curiosity.

"We're just worried that, you know, instead of three to four million on the first day, everybody rushes… and it can go to eight million and stress the system," he said.

The appeal for calm comes as many Malaysians are already making preparations, with long queues seen at National Registration Department (JPN) offices for MyKad replacements.

Khairul wants to reassure the public that the subsidy is not a one-day offer

He emphasised that the subsidised price of RM1.99 per litre will be available every day, so there is no need to panic or be the first to try the system.

"I would like to tell everyone not to rush. It's okay. The next day, the fuel is still RM1.99, and the following day is also RM1.99.

"So, we hope that not everybody is going to rush on that day itself," he added.

By staggering their visits over the first few days, drivers can help ensure a smoother transition, as well as prevent long queues and potential system errors at petrol stations nationwide.

Under BUDI95, eligible Malaysians can purchase RON95 petrol at RM1.99 per litre using their MyKad for verification, with a monthly quota of 300 litres.

Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government expects to save RM2.5 to RM4 billion under the new subsidy framework.
