As the new RON95 subsidy initiative officially opens for eligibility checks this morning, 25 September, many Malaysians are seeking clarity on the rules for using their MyKad at the pump
While the system offers flexibility for families sharing a vehicle, it strictly prohibits the use of another person's identity card.
In its list of FAQs released earlier this week, the Ministry of Finance (MOF) confirmed that the system is designed to accommodate families who share vehicles.
For instance, a husband and wife can both use their respective MyKads to fill up the same car.
This is possible because the 300-litre monthly subsidy quota is tied to the individual, not the vehicle. Each eligible person can use their personal allowance for a shared family car, provided they are physically present to conduct the transaction themselves.
That flexibility ends the moment a MyKad is used by someone other than its rightful owner.
As per the law, it is strictly illegal to use someone else's MyKad, whether it belongs to a spouse, parent, or friend, to purchase subsidised fuel
The deciding factor is physical presence.
For any transaction to be valid, the person whose name and photo are on the MyKad must be present at the time of purchase. This is the primary safeguard against fraud.
Using another person's identity card is an offence under Regulation 25 of the National Registration Regulations 1990 and can lead to legal penalties.
In conclusion, the MyKad owner must be present for any transaction.
