SMK Bandar Utama (4) has reportedly introduced a series of new rules to enhance student safety following the murder of a 16-year-old student on 14 October

According to China Press, citing a statement released by the Petaling Jaya school, the school has decided to implement three major measures with a dozen clauses.

The measures have received approval from the local education office and are effective immediately.

Below are the new safety measures:

1. Screening of belongings

  • Metal detectors: All students will be scanned with metal detectors inside the school corridors, rather than at the gate, to prevent outsiders from filming them.
  • Items checked: The screening targets metal objects, e-cigarettes, and mobile phones.
  • Equipment: The school has acquired three new metal detector wands for body scanning and two high-sensitivity metal detectors for checking school bags. The latter are expected to arrive on Friday, 24 October.
  • Personnel: Teachers on duty and prefects will jointly conduct these security scans.

2. Strict restroom access and monitoring

  • Pair system: All students must use the restroom in pairs.
  • Time limit: The maximum allotted time for restroom use is five to seven minutes.
  • Green card requirement: Students must carry a 'green card' when going to the restroom.
  • Segregation: Male students will use the ground-floor restrooms, while female students will use the first-floor restrooms.
  • Supervision: Teachers will be posted outside both the male and female restrooms to monitor student movements. This supervision measure will remain in place until the end of this year.
  • Restroom reopening: Following police clearance and cleaning, the ground-floor restrooms reopened for student use on Friday, 17 October.

3. Closure of changing rooms

  • Closure: The changing rooms located next to the sports area will be closed and locked.
  • Attire Policy: Students are instructed to wear their Physical Education (PE) attire from home on days they have PE classes, eliminating the need to change at school.
  • Temporary PE attire days: Students may wear their PE attire for the entire school day.

Speaking to SAYS, a parent said that other KL schools have also implemented similar rules, such as conducting regular spot checks and requiring female students to be accompanied by another female student or teacher when going to the toilet.
