A 43-year-old man who allegedly assaulted his pregnant wife in Sungai Petani, Kedah last week had previously been married nine times and has 11 children, police said

The assault had left the victim, a 39-year-old civil servant who was 12 weeks pregnant, with severe injuries to her face and body. She was later hospitalised and suffered a miscarriage as a result of her injuries.

The suspect was arrested yesterday, 28 April, five days after he allegedly fled with jewellery and savings worth RM50,000.

According to Buletin TV3, Kedah police chief Datuk Adzli Abu Shah said the man is believed to still have three wives, with his most recent marriage to the victim taking place in southern Thailand.

Investigations found the suspect had a pattern of targeting women with stable jobs, particularly civil servants

"If we look at it, the suspect seeks partners who have stable employment, most of them government staff," Adzli said during a press conference at the Kedah police headquarters today, 29 April.

Police also found that the suspect has multiple past criminal records involving violence against wives and girlfriends.

The offences include cases under Sections 323, 325, 318, and 506 of the Penal Code, covering voluntarily causing hurt, causing grievous hurt, concealing a birth by secretly disposing of a dead body, and criminal intimidation.

One of the more widely known cases took place in Johor Bahru in 2021, where the suspect assaulted his also then-pregnant wife, Jahidah Nordin, leaving her in a coma

She sustained severe brain injuries and multiple fractures and remains bedridden in a vegetative state to this day.

The suspect was previously sentenced to 10 years' jail, though the case is reportedly under appeal.

The suspect is currently under remand for seven days to assist investigations for the current case

Police also seized a Mercedes-Benz, four mobile phones, and items believed to have been used in the assault.

The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for causing grievous hurt, which carries up to 20 years' imprisonment, as well as a fine or whipping upon conviction.
