Man Tries To Take Baby Hostage After Being Caught Stealing In Penang Supermarket

A Vietnamese man was arrested after attempting to take a baby hostage while fleeing from a supermarket theft in Butterworth, Penang
According to Bernama, Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said the incident occurred at 12.45pm on Saturday, 9 August.
The supermarket supervisor had tried to stop the suspect after spotting him carrying several weighed seafood items without paying.
The Star reported that security guards and several others tried to detain the suspect, but he managed to break free.
"At that time, the man had pulled an 11-month-old baby boy who was with a family member, and was also holding a knife and pointing it at the public, including the baby," said Anuar.

With the help of several supermarket employees and members of the public, the suspect was eventually subdued
The suspect was handed over to the authorities after members of the public contacted the police.
The case is currently being investigated under Sections 380, 324 and 506 of the Penal Code for theft, voluntarily causing hurt with a weapon, and criminal intimidation.
Over the weekend, a one-minute video went viral, showing a scuffle between a man and a group of bystanders and security guards.
In the footage, the suspect tries to pull a child out of a mother's arms but fails. He is eventually subdued after being beaten by bystanders.
