Thai police are searching for a Malaysian man after he broke a wheel clamp on his Mercedes-Benz, which was parked in a no-parking zone in Hat Yai

Speaking to Utusan Malaysia, Hat Yai police chief Macha Kaewthong said authorities were alerted to the incident at about 10.30am yesterday, 4 May, when the man was seen breaking the wheel clamp before fleeing the scene at Jalan Kong Khong and Jalan Prachathipat.

"Before the incident, traffic police had clamped the wheel of a Mercedes-Benz with a Malaysian registration number after it was found to have violated regulations, and a summons was also placed on the vehicle's windscreen," he said.

Macha added that police have obtained CCTV footage of the incident, and that the suspect would not be able to evade justice.

"Based on the CCTV footage, the man reversed his car until the wheel clamp and cable were broken before speeding off.

"The act of damaging a traffic officer's wheel clamp is a serious offence as it is considered destruction of government property and obstruction of official duties," he said.

The suspect could face up to three months' imprisonment, a fine, or both upon conviction

Thai police have also handed over the vehicle's registration number to Thai customs and immigration authorities to enable restrictions to be imposed at all exit points to Malaysia.

Based on a photo published by Utusan Malaysia, the licence plate begins with the letter 'J', indicating that the vehicle is registered in Johor.
