A woman has been arrested for allegedly plotting with her boyfriend to kill her husband for his insurance money, with the 47-year-old victim narrowly escaping the attempted murder

According to Seri Alam district police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak, the victim lodged a police report on 22 December, claiming that a man had tried to smother him with a pillow while he was asleep at his home in Taman Ehsan Jaya, Johor Bahru.

Investigations found that the suspect was the victim's wife's boyfriend, who had allegedly been let into the house by her, according to the New Straits Times.

Police said she is believed to have restrained her husband's legs while her boyfriend covered his face, causing him to struggle to breathe.

"The victim fought for his life and managed to break free, while the suspect fled the scene," Sohaimi said in a statement yesterday, 1 January.

Police also discovered that about a week before the incident, the woman had repeatedly questioned her husband about his savings and insurance policies

Following a tip-off, the Seri Alam Criminal Investigation Division arrested both suspects on 23 December.

Sohaimi said the investigation papers have been completed and submitted to the Johor State public prosecutor's office, which has directed that both be charged under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.

If convicted, they face up to 20 years in prison.

Both suspects are expected to be charged at the Sessions Court in Seri Alam today, 2 January.
