A well-known religious preacher was remanded for one day by the Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court today, 5 February, to assist investigations into the alleged misuse of RM600,000 linked to a prominent religious learning centre
The remand order was granted by Magistrate Noor Fadlina Musa following an application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The preacher, who is also understood to be the founder of a well-known religious learning centre in the Kuala Muda district, was detained yesterday, 4 February, while giving a statement at the MACC office in Sungai Petani.
He had previously been investigated by the MACC over allegations of collecting public donations and misappropriating the funds for personal use.
Sources said the preacher allegedly took a commission from donation collections, which was then used to purchase various assets and luxury vehicles
An official statement regarding the remand order is expected to be issued by the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya, reported Harian Metro.
