A 14-year-old girl from Kepong who was reported missing for over four days has been found safe in Batu Pahat, Johor, but her family now fears she may have been groomed by a man in his 40s whom she met during online gaming sessions
The teen, identified as Wong Yee Xuan, reportedly skipped school in Taman Ehsan, Kepong, to meet the man in his 40s whom she had befriended through online gaming sessions.
Her grandfather raised the alarm after returning to pick her up from school at 12.30pm on 23 July, only to find out she had never attended class that morning, reported China Press.
The girl's father, known only as Wong, 43, said the family had long been concerned about her "unusual relationship" with the man believed to be in his 40s
The two reportedly met during online gaming sessions and frequently spent time together outside the virtual world.
The man had allegedly promised Yee Xuan material gifts, including a car and property, in the future.
According to the family, the man insisted he was "just a friend" and that he would wait until Yee Xuan was older before pursuing anything further.
The man was also said to be in debt to loan sharks and had recently been linked to a local scam involving more than RM10,000.
Wong recalled several instances where his daughter returned home late, once bearing what appeared to be a hickey on her neck, prompting her grandparents to file a police report out of concern for her wellbeing.
"I was working in Singapore, and after my wife passed away last year, I entrusted my children to my parents' care. It was shocking to discover that my daughter had left school during class hours and vanished without a trace," her father was quoted as saying by China Press.
Despite efforts to contact the man, including attempts to trace his phone number, the family received no response
They even visited his former residence in Johor, only to learn it had been sold years ago.
On the evening of 27 July, Johor police informed the family that Yee Xuan was found safe in Batu Pahat. However, details about her condition, and whether she was with the man, remain unclear, pending further discussions between the family and authorities, according to reports.
According to Utusan Malaysia, Gombak district police chief ACP Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said the case was classified as a missing person investigation.
He added that police have been in constant contact with the girl's grandfather and are actively working to clarify the circumstances surrounding her disappearance.
The case quickly gained traction on social media after the family posted photos showing Yee Xuan outside a luxury minivan, including its registration plate, along with an image of the man's Malaysian identity card, prompting calls for greater vigilance over children's online interactions and the risks behind seemingly innocent online friendships.
