The Shah Alam High Court has sentenced Muhammad Fakrul Aiman Sajali, 22, to death by hanging after he pleaded guilty to murdering and burning his pregnant girlfriend in Sabak Bernam two years ago
Judge Norazlin Othman handed down the sentence after Fakrul Aiman maintained his guilty plea to murdering Nur Anisah Abdul Wahab, 21, between 8.30pm on 22 May 2023 and 8am on 23 May 2023, at Jalan Sungai Limau.
Under Section 302 of the Penal Code, the offence carries the death penalty or imprisonment for 30 to 40 years, along with at least 12 strokes of the cane if not sentenced to death.
In her ruling yesterday, 15 October, Norazlin said the court was satisfied that the accused had voluntarily pleaded guilty and accepted the prosecution's evidence as true.
She described the crime as "cruel and premeditated", warranting the harshest sentence.
"Not only was one life lost — that of the victim — but also her unborn child, who was 18 weeks in the womb," the judge said, citing autopsy findings that showed burn marks over almost the entire body.
"Even more horrifically, the victim's abdomen was torn open, exposing the intestines and internal organs. The victim also sustained stab and slash wounds to the abdomen and palms. The accused was said to have struck the victim on the head with a stick, causing her to fall, before dragging her to the edge of a drain, taking a knife from the car, stabbing her in the abdomen, and slashing her neck," said the judge.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Ashiqin Zulkifli submitted 112 exhibits to the court, including a knife, a stick, an ultrasound image of the foetus, and the victim's clothing.
She described the murder as an "extremely serious" crime involving the loss of two innocent lives.
"The way the victim died was too cruel. The accused had planned the crime, and the offence involves public interest — it should serve as a lesson to all," she said.
Meanwhile, lawyer Muhammad Nor Tamrin, in his mitigation, said his client had been made a scapegoat, citing a DNA report from the Malaysian Department of Chemistry, which confirmed that the 18-week-old foetus did not belong to Fakrul Aiman.
He said that Fakrul Aiman had also been under pressure from a man claiming to be the husband of the victim's cousin, who had allegedly threatened him to take responsibility for the pregnancy.
"The accused is a student at a higher learning institution with no criminal or disciplinary record and has demonstrated excellent academic performance, achieving a final examination grade point average (GPA) of 3.80," he said.
Muhammad Nor urged the court to consider imposing the minimum sentence, as the accused had pleaded guilty before the trial commenced.
However, the judge ruled that the brutality and premeditated nature of the crime outweighed the mitigating factors, sentencing Fakrul Aiman to death.
