Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad had to leave his public birthday celebration early yesterday, 13 July, after cycling 9km on a tandem bicycle in Putrajaya

According to Berita Harian, a picnic and potluck gathering was held in conjunction with Dr Mahathir's 100th birthday (10 July) and his wife Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali's 99th birthday (12 July) at Tasik Putrajaya next to the Perdana Leadership Foundation.

More than 500 individuals turned up for the occasion, bringing along various dishes to enjoy a lakeside breakfast with their families.

Among those present were Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar and Dr Mahathir's son, Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir.

The centenarian arrived at the location by car at 7.45am, then cycled around the lake on a tandem bicycle accompanied by special security officers.

After cycling about 8km to 9km, Dr Mahathir appeared fatigued and took a short rest on a chair before heading to the breakfast table.

At 10am, Dr Mahathir left the event early, cutting short the scheduled mingling and photo session with attendees

Speaking to Astro Awani, his aide Sufi Yusoff said the former premier was later admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) to rest.

"Yes, Tun is really tired. So he left the event early and is now resting."

"His condition is okay, he was just asked to rest and is now in the IJN," Sufi said yesterday.

The New Straits Times reported that Dr Mahathir was later discharged at 4.45pm after spending about five hours at the hospital.
