Dog Attack Leaves 6-Year-Old Cheras Boy Hospitalised

The dog reportedly wore a pet collar, but its owner is currently unknown.

A 6-year-old boy was attacked by a dog yesterday while playing near his home in Batu 9, Cheras

According to the New Straits Times, the child was cycling around 6.30pm when the incident occurred.

The attack was captured on video, which showed the dog mauling the child before a neighbour chased the dog away with a stick. Several other neighbours also came to assist.

The dog eventually released the boy and fled, allowing him to run to safety.

The boy suffered head injuries and is currently hospitalised at the paediatric ward in Kajang Hospital, where he is reportedly in stable condition

Kajang Municipal Council (MPKj) enforcement officers have reportedly captured the dog.

While unconfirmed, eyewitness accounts and pictures of the dog after its capture suggest it was wearing a collar, indicating it may have been a pet.

Investigations are currently underway to determine if the dog was registered, and to identify its owner.

The case is being investigated under Section 289 of the Penal Code for negligence with respect to an animal

If found guilty, offenders face a jail term of up to six months, a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both.

It is also being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Animals Act 1953, which allows officers to confine animals for rabies or other infectious disease checks.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Naazron Abdul Yusof has urged the public to obtain approval from local authorities before keeping a dog, and to ensure that their pets are properly controlled to prevent similar incidents.

He added that anyone with relevant information may contact the Kajang police headquarters or investigating officer Inspector Nursyaza Farhah Samhairi.
