Police have arrested a couple caught having sex at a cemetery in Penang
According to the New Straits Times, Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the couple, aged in their 30s and 50s, were arrested around George Town last night, 23 March.
"Initial checks showed both are not husband and wife," he said.
The case is currently being investigated under Sections 294 and 509 of the Penal Code for public indecency and for making gestures or sounds intended to insult the modesty of others.
If convicted, they could face up to three months and five years in jail, respectively.
Their arrest came after the Penang United Hokkien Cemetery (UHC) confirmed that the incident took place at one of the association's cemeteries on Sunday, 22 March
Speaking to China Press, Penang UHC board director Datuk Cheah Cheng Ean said the suspects are believed to be foreigners, adding that it may not have been their first time engaging in indecent behaviour at the location.
The cemetery is understood to be in a relatively secluded area at the end of a dead-end alley, surrounded by dense forest and hillsides that form a natural barrier.
As a result, activities within the grounds are difficult to detect by drivers passing the main road.
However, as the site also houses a crematorium, columbarium, and funeral home, visitors continue to frequent the area daily to pay their respects or attend funeral services.
On Sunday, a 38-second video went viral showing a man standing naked with his back to the camera, and a partially undressed woman sitting on a tombstone
In the clip, a woman confronts the pair, shouting, "I found you two here again! They have been naked in the cemetery several times already.
"You are disrespecting the deceased by carrying out such an indecent act here. I am calling the police."
As the video continues, the man is seen putting on his trousers and apologising, but the woman filming the video tells him that an apology is not enough.
