UPDATE:

The Boy Has Been Charged With Murder

A 14-year-old male student will be charged with murder today, 22 October, over the fatal stabbing of 16-year-old Yap Shing Xuen at SMK Bandar Utama Damansara (4)

In a statement yesterday, 21 October, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) said it had reviewed the investigation papers submitted by the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) and found sufficient grounds to prosecute the teenager under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.

"Following a thorough review of the investigation papers, it was found that there is sufficient basis for a charge to be brought against a male student involved in the incident. In relation to this, these Chambers have decided to charge the said student under section 302 of the Penal Code [Act 574] for the offence of murder," read the statement.

The AGC confirmed that the charge will be brought before the Petaling Jaya Magistrates' Court later today.

The suspect was remanded from 15 October, with an extension granted on 21 October until 28 October to facilitate investigations.

Earlier, Selangor police chief Datuk Shazeli Kahar said investigators are looking into whether violent video games or certain online content may have influenced the suspect's behaviour and mindset before the attack

He said police were identifying which specific platforms had the most significant impact on the suspect.

"Video games could be one of them," he was quoted as saying by the New Straits Times, adding that the suspect's decision to wear gloves suggested preparation before the act.

Investigators also reportedly recovered handwritten notes containing references to terms like "Zero Day" and "NPC", commonly associated with gaming and Internet culture.

Shazeli said police were still gathering comprehensive statements to provide solid recommendations to the Deputy Public Prosecutor, adding that collaboration with school authorities remains ongoing.

He also clarified that the suspect had not expressed his romantic feelings towards the victim, despite earlier reports suggesting otherwise.

According to Shazeli, the suspect had been receiving counselling for academic performance, not psychological treatment, and the school had not identified any behavioural or disciplinary issues before the tragedy.

Meanwhile, at a press conference held during the wake for her daughter, Yap's mother, Wong Lee Ping, claimed that her daughter had been stabbed about 200 times during the attack

"We know online reports say 50 stab wounds, but in reality, my daughter suffered 200 stab wounds. She had 200 stab wounds from the stabbing. Not slashes, but stabs," she said, adding that most injuries were on the right side of Yap's body.

Wong also said she was told that the suspect had allegedly jumped from above the lavatory cubicle where Yap was located before stabbing her multiple times.

"By the time the teacher came and forced the door open, she was already gone," Wong said.

However, police have yet to verify the claim that Yap was stabbed 200 times.

The victim was fatally stabbed on 14 October at her school in Bandar Utama. The suspect was arrested shortly after the incident.
