A 17-year-old student was arrested by the Kedah National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) after testing positive for drugs following a trip to Thailand

According to Berita Harian, the Form Five student and three 18-year-old friends, who were on two motorcycles, were detained at the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine, and Security (ICQS) Complex in Bukit Kayu Hitam on Tuesday, 16 September.

All four later tested positive for ketamine.

The Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate is believed to have consumed the drug by smoking a laced cigarette while partying in Thailand.

Kedah AADK director Khairul Anwar Ahmad said the teenager admitted he took the drug to cope with stress

"Investigations found the teenager has lived with his grandparents ever since his parents divorced when he was 9.

"He claimed he wanted to try the drug due to life pressures and curiosity.

"In addition, he admitted this was the second time he had tried drugs, having first done so on an earlier trip to Thailand," said Khairul.

The student from Penang will be investigated under Section 3(1) of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.

Ketamine is illegal in both Thailand and Malaysia.

According to the Bangkok Post, the drug is a stimulant classified as a Type 2 narcotic in Thailand. Possession can result in up to seven years' imprisonment and a fine of up to 700,000 baht (about RM92,350), while distributing the drug carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison and a maximum fine of 1.5 million baht (about RM197,900).

However, ketamine is permitted for medical use in Thailand as a short-acting anaesthetic.
