A woman has lodged a report after being harassed by loan sharks over a debt incurred from an online romance

The Star reported that the 46-year-old woman, an e-hailing driver named Goh, initially borrowed RM3,000 late last year to pay a supposed boyfriend she met online, who demanded cash.

However, the debt soon swelled to RM6,200, not including interests and 'fines'.

Goh and her family started getting stalked and intimidated by the loan sharks, who could somehow find private information

The moneylenders sent Goh screenshots of her company earnings, along with pictures of herself, her family members, and their personal details.

They even called her to issue a warning as soon as she stepped out of the police station after filing a report.

Goh said severed chicken heads were also thrown into the compound of her mother's home, and she fears for the safety of her 21-year-old daughter.

This was not Goh's first experience falling into debt over an online romance

In July 2024, Goh took a RM12,000 loan to pay a previous boyfriend she had met online.

Goh cleared her debts with help from the MCA Public Services and Complaints Department, headed by Datuk Seri Michael Chong, but still ended up losing almost RM30,000 to her online boyfriend.

Chong said his department handled 422 moneylending cases last year, with losses amounting to RM44 million.
