The Attorney-General's Chambers (AGC) has decided to charge several suspects with bullying following the death of SMKA Tun Datu Mustapha student, Zara Qairina, in Sabah

In a statement today, 18 August, the AGC said the decision was made based on available evidence after reviewing the investigation papers submitted by the police.

The AGC stressed that the charges will not interfere with the ongoing inquest it has ordered.

"The chambers emphasises that although the decision to charge the suspects for bullying has been made, this decision will not affect the investigation still being carried out by the Royal Malaysia Police regarding the death of Zara Qairina, including the inquest proceedings that will take place in court," it said.

The AGC ordered an inquest into Zara's death on 13 August following her family's request to determine if any criminal element was involved

According to the New Straits Times, an inquest is a judicial inquiry led by a coroner or magistrate to establish how, when, and where a death occurred, particularly in cases that are sudden, unnatural, or suspicious.

Unlike a trial, it does not assign guilt or liability but focuses solely on uncovering the facts of the case.
