A 26-year-old tourist from China was arrested at KLIA Terminal 2 after Customs officers found nearly 7kg of ketamine hidden in his luggage

KLIA Customs director Zulkifli Muhammad said the man was detained at the arrival hall on 28 October during a joint operation with the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS).

A scan of his bags had raised red flags, prompting officers to carry out a thorough inspection, reported the New Straits Times.

Inside the lining of two pieces of luggage, officers discovered several small translucent packets containing a white powdery substance wrapped in layers of aluminium and cardboard.

The substance was later confirmed to be ketamine, weighing 6.88kg in total and valued at over RM344,000.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952

It carries the death penalty or life imprisonment with at least 12 strokes of the cane upon conviction.

The suspect has since been charged in court.

Zulkifli added that Customs will continue to strengthen collaboration with security agencies to prevent drug and contraband smuggling at all entry points.

Members of the public with information on smuggling are urged to contact Customs at 1-800-88-8855 or their nearest Customs office.
