Six severed heads were found on a Central Mexico road this week, an area not known for cartel violence

According to BBC, local authorities discovered the gruesome scene on a road between the broadly peaceful states of Puebla and Tlaxcala.

No motive has been established, and it remains unclear whether any criminal groups were involved. Authorities have yet to comment on the killings.

A message allegedly warning rival gangs was found at the scene, signed by a group calling itself "La Barredora"

Such messages are often left on bodies in Mexico as warnings or punishments for breaking cartel rules. Local media reported that the note blamed the violence on disputes between fuel-smuggling gangs known as huachicoleros.

La Barredora, which translates to "The Sweepers", shares its name with a little-known criminal gang from the western state of Guerrero, though it is unclear if they are connected.

Besides drug trafficking, fuel theft has been on the rise in Mexico in recent years. It is a lucrative trade for criminal groups, costing the nation an estimated USD24 million (RM101 million) a day.

Such extreme violence usually happens on the northern and coastal regions of the country, where drug cartels operate

Around 480,000 people have died in drug-related violence since 2006, when the Mexican government initiated a crackdown on criminal groups with military force. Thousands more are missing.

The nation remains gripped by violence, with similar crimes reported in recent months and years.
