6.8-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Waters Off Sabah, No Tsunami Threat

A strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck waters off Sabah at 12.57am early Monday morning, 23 February, but no tsunami threat has been reported

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia) said the quake's epicentre was located 49km west of Kudat, at coordinates 7.0° north and 116.4° east, with a depth of 678km.

Tremors were felt across Sabah, as well as in several areas in Sarawak and Peninsular Malaysia.

Despite the strong quake, METMalaysia confirmed there is no tsunami threat to Malaysia and said it will continue monitoring the situation

Meanwhile, the Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre told Bernama that no incidents have been reported following the earthquake.

"All stations are patrolling and monitoring their areas to ensure public safety and keep the situation under control," it said.

Following the quake, Malaysians took to social media to share their experiences and relief that no major damage was reported

"Everyone living on the 10th floor quickly ran downstairs, the earthquake was so strong. Ya Allah, protect us from bad things," wrote one netizen, sharing a video of residents gathered in an open parking area.

Others also offered prayers, hoping Sabah would be spared from further disaster.
