44-Year-Old Man Fined RM100 After Flipping Off Motorist

The man pleaded guilty to the offence.

A 44-year-old man was fined RM100 for making an indecent gesture at a motorist on a road in Johor

Kenneth Tan Kah Wee pleaded guilty under Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955 at the Johor Bahru Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, 19 November, reported Malay Mail.

The provision prohibits insulting behaviour, including the use of indecent, threatening, or abusive words or actions likely to cause a breach of the peace.

It carries a maximum fine of RM100 upon conviction.

According to the charge sheet, the accused flipped his middle finger at a motorist on Jalan Pulai 62, Skudai at 5.22pm last Wednesday, 12 November.

Magistrate Nabilah Nizam ordered Tan to pay the fine, with a default sentence of two days' imprisonment if it remained unpaid

Deputy public prosecutor Nor Deana Aqilah Aliman prosecuted the case, while Tan appeared unrepresented.

Malay Mail reported that the provision has recently been applied to prosecute individuals displaying insulting behaviour on social media.

It can also be applied to anyone who posts or leaves written materials or drawings intended to provoke a breach of the peace.
