More new flights are coming to Penang! Chinese low-cost carrier Spring Airlines will start operating daily flights between Shanghai and Penang from 30 January 2026

The new service will operate between Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Penang International Airport.

One flight will operate daily on an Airbus A320, arriving in Penang at 2.30pm before departing back to Shanghai at 3.30pm.

With this launch, Spring Airlines will become the third airline serving the Penang–Shanghai route, alongside Juneyao Airlines and Shanghai Airlines.

The route covers approximately 3,645km, with a flight time of about five hours and 50 minutes.

Tourism Malaysia deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the new service will offer travellers greater convenience and accessibility

He added that although the initial approval was for seasonal flights, strong demand is expected to support the permanent service.

Yeoh said the new route is expected to significantly boost tourist arrivals between Penang and Shanghai, as well as from surrounding regions.

"The expansion of air links also reflects Malaysia's commitment to strengthening ties with China, while supporting the growth of both our aviation and tourism sectors," he said.
