Taking the ferry to Langkawi is still one of the most popular ways to get to the island, especially for travellers driving up from Kuala Lumpur or nearby northern states

If you don't want to fly into Langkawi, taking the ferry is one of the easiest alternatives, with daily departures available from both Kuala Kedah and Kuala Perlis.

The process is fairly simple, but if it's your first time, things like choosing the right jetty, figuring out ferry timings, and knowing when to arrive can get confusing fast.

Here's all you need to know before you board:

1. First, choose which ferry terminal works best for your trip

Most travellers heading to Langkawi usually depart from either Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis.

Both ferries will get you to the island, but the travel time, ticket prices, and driving distance can be slightly different depending on where you're coming from.

Details Kuala Perlis Kuala Kedah
Estimated Ferry Duration Around 1 hour 15 minutes Around 1 hour 45 minutes

Child Ticket Price (Return) Around RM26 to RM32 Around RM34 to RM41
Best For Travellers driving up from Kuala Lumpur or southern states who want a shorter ferry ride Travellers coming from northern states like Penang or Kedah

It's also usually better to book your return ticket early, especially during weekends or holiday periods, unless you're still unsure about your return date.

Most travellers usually park their cars at the ferry terminal before boarding, and both jetties have nearby paid parking areas available.

If you're thinking of bringing your car along instead of parking it at the jetty, there is actually an option for that too!

But it's not through the usual passenger ferry. You can use the Langkawi Auto Express service from Kuala Perlis, which lets you travel to the island together with your car on the same ferry.

Fares usually start from around RM130 one way for smaller cars, but can go up to around RM300 and above depending on your car size and engine. It's also a good idea to book early during weekends and holiday periods, and not rely on walk-ins. You can make your bookings here.

2. Ferry schedules can change, so always check before your trip

Ferries usually start operating from around 7.30am, with the last trips typically departing around 7pm. On most days, there are usually about three to four ferry trips available between Langkawi and the mainland, though schedules can still change depending on weather and sea conditions.

The busiest travel hours are usually between mid-morning and early afternoon, especially during weekends and public holidays.

If you're travelling during a long weekend or holiday season, it's better to check ferry timings early and avoid relying on walk-in availability. You can visit their official website for the timing update.

3. Booking online is usually the easier option

Tickets can be purchased either online or directly at the ferry terminal counter. That said, online booking is usually the safer choice, especially during peak periods when tickets can sell out quickly.

Most online bookings come with a digital boarding pass and assigned seating, so you can usually board directly using the QR code or barcode on your phone.

You can make your online booking here.

Most importantly, even if you already have a confirmed ticket, don't show up last minute expecting the ferry to wait!

Travellers are generally advised to arrive at least 45 minutes to one hour before departure. Before boarding, make sure you:

  • Have your IC or passport ready
  • Keep your ticket easily accessible
  • Double-check your boarding gate
  • Head to the queue once boarding is announced

If there's one part of the trip you don't want to gamble with, it's timing. Ferries usually leave as scheduled, and late arrivals may need to rebook.

Ferry sorted, now just don't miss it!
