Back in 1883, this place used to be a real prison with 142 years of history behind its gates

Built during the reign of Sultan Ibrahim by contractor Wong Ah Fook, Ayer Molek Prison housed criminals and political dissenters under British and Japanese rule.

It was finally decommissioned in 2018 and sat eerily empty until local creatives saw its potential.

Now, it's called Kota Jail, a thriving culture and community hub thanks to JB's youth and artists

Since March 2025, Kota Jail has been reimagined as a public space thanks to local collectives, Tourism Johor, and the Prisons Department.

The formerly abandoned 5.2-hectare prison is now buzzing with bazaars, cafés, art shows, and weekend events that celebrate culture and creativity.

Kota Jail might just become Johor's next major tourist attraction, as it's being developed for Visit Johor Year 2026

According to Malay Mail, Tourism Johor director Shahril Nizam Abdul Rahim said, "Despite being a known Johor Bahru landmark, many people are curious of what the inside of the building is as it has served as a prison for more than a hundred years.

"With the transformation, the public can now look inside the former prison and experience a unique side to Johor Bahru's history," said the director.
