If you're planning to drive overseas, you can apply for an International Driving Permit (IDP).
This can be done at any Road Transport Department (JPJ) branch or the Automobile Association of Malaysia (AAM).

Both agencies are authorised to issue IDPs to Malaysians.
The process and fee are similar, but JPJ tends to be more convenient since most states have branches.
Before applying, make sure you:
- Hold a valid Competent Driving Licence (CDL) — probationary (PDL) holders aren't eligible
- Are at least 18 years old
- Have a licence that's valid for at least one year from the date of IDP application
- Are not blacklisted by JPJ
ㅤ
If your licence is expiring soon, renew it first at JPJ or via the MyJPJ app.
Here's a list of documents you'll need to bring along on the day itself
- Original and copy of your Malaysian driving licence (CDL)
- Original and copy of your MyKad or passport
- Two passport-sized colour photos (white background)
- Completed Form JPJ L1 (available at JPJ/AAM offices)
- Payment of RM150 for one year (subject to change)
Next, here's a step-by-step guide to applying at JPJ or AAM:

STEP 1: Visit any JPJ office or AAM branch
STEP 2: Submit your form and documents
STEP 3: Pay RM150
STEP 4: Receive your IDP on the same day (in most cases)
Your IDP is valid for one year from the date of issue.
You must carry both your Malaysian licence and your IDP when driving overseas. Renew it annually using the same process if you plan to continue driving abroad.
