If you've been driving for a while, but have never pumped your car tyres before, now's the time to learn how
Typically, you're encouraged to pump air once every one or two months, or before a long road trip.
Most petrol stations in Malaysia provide free air pumps, but if you have never used one before, the machine can look confusing. The good news is that it only takes a few minutes to learn.
Here's a step-by-step guide:
1. First, check your recommended tyre pressure

Most cars have a sticker inside the driver's door or fuel cap showing the recommended tyre pressure, measured in PSI or kPa. You can also find this information in your car manual.
Here's something you might not know: that same sticker also lists the recommended pressure based on how many passengers you're carrying.that same sticker also lists the recommended pressure based on how many passengers you're carrying. For example, if you have one to three passengers with light luggage, 190 kPa is usually enough. But if your car is fully loaded, aim for around 220 kPa instead.
Using the correct pressure is important for safety, fuel efficiency, and tyre lifespan.
2. Park near the pump and remove the valve caps

Position your car close enough so the pump hose can reach all four tyres. Then, twist off the small caps on the tyre valves and keep them in a safe spot.
3. Set the pressure and connect the hose

On the air pump, key in your car's recommended pressure (for example, 220 kPa). Firmly attach the nozzle to the tyre valve. The machine will automatically inflate or release air until it reaches the correct level.
If the machine beeps, that simply means the process is complete.
4. Repeat for all tyres, including the spare if possible

Continue the same steps for every tyre. It's also a good habit to check the spare tyre in your boot so you know it's ready if you ever need it.
Once all tyres are inflated, screw the caps back on. That's it! Your tyres are now properly inflated and your car is safer and more fuel efficient.
