Roblox will soon implement new age verification mechanisms specifically designed to protect children on its massively popular gaming platform

The American company announced it will "expand age estimation to all Roblox users who access our on-platform communication features by the end of this year", according to a blog post by its head of safety, Matt Kaufman.

This follows multiple allegations that it failed to protect its young user base.

This new system will combine age estimates with official ID verification and parental consent.

Kaufman added that the goal is to "limit communication between adults and minors unless they know each other in the real world"

The move comes after the game, which has around 100 million daily users, has repeatedly been accused of not doing enough to safeguard its youngest players.

About 40% of its users in 2024 were under the age of 13.

In 2024, the US state of Louisiana filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing it of facilitating child exploitation

Activist investment firm Hindenburg Research also alleged the platform was not sufficiently protecting users from sexual predators.

Roblox's initiative aligns with a growing global trend of stricter online age controls, with countries like the UK and France implementing new rules to verify users' ages on websites and social networks.
