Sony is facing a 1.97 billion pound (RM10.4 billion) lawsuit for allegedly overcharging 12.2 million UK customers on the PlayStation Store over the last decade

According to AFP, the Japanese tech giant will appear in a London court this Tuesday, 10 March, to face the class action lawsuit.

The company stands accused of breaching competition laws and "exploiting its UK customers" for 10 years.

The legal action, led by consumer campaigner Alex Neill, represents approximately 12.2 million users who allegedly paid too much for digital games and in-game content

Neill told AFP that the case seeks to end this conduct and secure compensation for those affected.

The claimants argued that Sony maintains a "near monopoly" on digital sales for its consoles.

This allegedly allowed the company to dictate prices and charge a 30% sales commission to video game publishers.

The lawsuit pointed out that PC game distribution platforms typically charge lower commissions ranging from 12% to 20%

The claimants' website alleged that games are now designed to "incentivise players to spend as much money as possible [including children]".

The trial is set to take place at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London and is expected to last around 10 weeks.

The suit covers anyone who bought digital content via the PlayStation Store in the 10 years leading up to February 2026

Under UK law, affected persons were included in this class action by default unless they chose to opt out.

While Sony did not immediately respond to requests for comment, its defence argued that its current distribution model is entirely justified.
